Alexa: Our tenacious angel
Alexa: Our tenacious Angel
Children are gifts, and we were blessed to have our sweet blonde bullet in our lives for four and a half years. As a family, we are trying to glean some good from our tragic loss of our daughter who passed away as a result of being struck by an 'alleged' impaired driver last May. Alexa was surrounded by some of her favourite people, and was feeding her dearest 'Horsey Love' at the time of the collision. There is comfort in knowing she was enjoying her life to the very last moment. Every life serves a purpose; we fervently believe that everyone can make a difference. We choose to allow Alexa's life to continue giving, and use her story as an inspiration for being the best that we can be: as individuals, as a community, and as a society. Together, let us strive for our best and act for Alexa. Such a spirit deserves our most sincere efforts.
Dear sweet Alexa came into our world on October 9, 2003, already larger than life, weighing 8 pounds 13.5 ounces. Full of zeal with a tenacious spirit, her early years were vibrant, interesting, and dominant. Being a kindred spirit with dad, she 'plowed' through life with purpose, determination and vigor. With her blonde curls flowing and her purposeful spirit leading, additionally, Alexa did possess tremendous kindness and a unique ability to show love. Her wee hands would find the softest part of your skin, where she would delicately caress and 'love' you. Needless to say, in her honesty, she would openly admit that she did not care for your dryer areas such as heels or elbows. Such honesty was rarity and her love was pure.
Alexa lived with passion. She loved freely with abandonment, but had a real sense of herself. She accepted her shortcomings without ever letting these affect her sense of self. She was not perfect, and she accepted this, genuinely wanted to improve, but never allowed this knowledge to dull her self confidence. Frankly, I was envious of her spirit and confidence. These were qualities that I desire in myself, and in all the young women I encounter. Self doubt never crept in; inability was never a consideration. While urging her father to remove the training wheels from her two wheeled bicycle, she encountered my rantings as on overprotective mother. With disregard for my disbelief, she diligently decided to progress. Like a nervous mother, I watched first from the window, and as I saw the amazing progress, I quickly moved road side where I watched in awe as she quickly mastered riding on two wheels. As she progressed from one quivery lap to the next, I began to cheer her on, and tell her how proud I was of her. With a smile on her face, and a gleam in her eye, she boldly rode by me, her blond hair blowing behind her as she said three words to me that I will never forget... You were wrong!
I was proud to be wrong. How dare I doubt such determination. Now, as Alexa's family, we stand strong and determined to make the changes that we need to improve the safety in our province.
